TEHRAN The Swiss ambassador to Tehran was summoned yesterday to the Foreign Ministry following the interception of an Iranian oil tanker by a number of U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf.
According to the Foreign Ministry Press Office, Mahdi Mohtashami, the director of the ministry's U.S. Affairs Department, expressed Iran's strong protest over the action saying it was in violation of international law. He asked for evidence that justified the move, and that measures be adopted to prevent the repeat of such actions. The Iranian official was quoted as saying that the interception was in fact an invasion of the Islamic Republic's territory and that Iran would pursue the case until justice is served.
At the meeting, the Swiss ambassador expressed deep regret over the incident and said that he would relay Iran's views to the U.S. as soon as possible.
