Tehran, Jan 13, IRNA - President Mohammad Khatami said on Saturday evening that Iran seeks peace based on justice and opposes terrorists and terrorist acts anywhere in the world. President Khatami told the British Prime Minister Tony Blair on phone that calm and stability would not be restored in Afghanistan unless the people can have a say in determining their own fate.

He said the Islamic Republic of Iran supports the interim government of Afghanistan and would spare no efforts to cooperate with the administration within framework of the international regulations with an aim to promote that country's affairs.
Iran-Afghan border is completely sealed off, borders are fully controlled and nobody, not even the terrorist groups, would be allowed to cross them, added the President.
Khatami said the world should take lessons from the September 11 incident, set aside ambiguous approaches towards terrorism, and uproot the 'ugly' phenomenon with its agents and their bases.
Elsewhere in his remarks, President Khatami expressed disgust at Israel's suppressive measures and called the Middle East as a 'critical' spot.
He said there will be no fundamental solution to the Middle East problem unless the denied rights of the oppressed Palestinian nation and interests of all the residents of the land are met.
He called as 'positive' the tone of westerners towards Palestinians after the September 11 incident and said Israel, that was not happy with the trend, is making attempts to change the scene.
He expressed hope that other would not fall into the whirlpool created by the Zionist extremist.
Iran's chief executive underlined the need to expand Tehran-London ties and expressed hope that two-way cooperation would further expand in light of mutual respect.
Blair, stressing dialogue between the West and the world of Islam, expressed hope that offsetting the Middle East problem has been put as a long-term project in the West's agenda.
He stressed expansion of relations between Iran and the UK and provided President Khatami with necessary explanations on misgivings about the new British ambassador to Tehran.
