Tehran, Feb 11, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said on Monday the Iranian nation is determined to defend its country, independence, freedom and the Islamic Republic.
Addressing a large crowd of people who had gathered in Azadi (freedom) Square to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of triumph of the Islamic Revolution, the president said that the Iranian nation has already responded to the threats posed by the United States to Iran's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, but "Will the dark hearts of the immature politicians of the world who are posing threats to the Iranian nation and the Islamic Revolution awaken? I hope so."
He said that "detente" and "confidence-building" are the principles of the Iranian diplomacy supported by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, adding that Iran has decided to develop relations with all countries on the basis of mutual respect, except for those which have been founded illegitimately.
He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran endeavors to help stablish international peace, adding that Iran is the harbinger of peace based on justice.
Iran is against terrorism, pressure and hegemony of the big powers and advocates logical policies, and convergence of views among world nations on international peace, he said adding that Iran also follows peaceful policy in its relations with other states on the basis of mutual respect.
"Nonetheless, there are some elements on the international scene which have posed threats to Iran and the Iranian nation," he said.
"The Islamic Revolution has turned the country from a base for the big powers to an independent country. And normally, those whose interests have been endangered in Iran by the Islamic Revolution,
have become hostile to the Iranian nation and are posing threats to Iran and exerting pressure," he said while being acclaimed by the
audience.
"You, the Iranian nation has got the country from the hands of the foreign lackeys and handed it over to your own children to administer the country, something which is unpleasant for the big powers," the President said.
Elaborating on the reasons why the United States has threatened Iran, President Khatami said that the threats emanate from the mentality of the United States or some parts of its administration who regard themselves as master of the world and see their interests contrary to that of other nations. Since they wield power, they want to force others to obey them and if someone (some nations) do not heed them, they fabricate different accusations against them to put pressure on them, he said.
"The Islamic Revolution has jeopardized the illegitimate interests of the United States in the region. It is normal for it to be exposed to the enmity and wrath of the US," President Khatami said.
The president, in the meantime, made it clear that the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. This is an ideological perception, because Iran is ideologically bound to support the oppressed anywhere in the world which consequently has brought animosity of the oppressors, President Khatami said.
"The Iranian nation cannot accept that a nation has been kicked out of their homeland and those who have remained in their own country Palestine) have been exposed to suppression, massacre and pressure," President Khatami said.
"The Iranian nation is against Israel's state terrorism and advocates the basic rights of the Palestinian nation. It is normal those who see their interests contrary to that of other nations are dissatisfied with Iran, especially the Zionist lobby which exercize definite influence on the US policies," President Khatami said.
"For this reason, the Iranian nation has been exposed to various threats, military coup, and eight years of imposed war in the past 23 years. They backed waves of terrorist operations against Iranian (revolutionary) officials. They imposed economic sanctions on Iran and even exerted pressure on the other countries to mar their relations with Iran. Today they have embarked on a very ridiculous and naive scenario of threatening the Iranian nation and the Islamic Revolution," he said.
"It is surprising that today, they are threatening a nation and a system of government which according to their own (US) criteria is the most democratic system in the region," the president said.
"The time is gone for the bullying. Such a naive and inaccurate policies will damage the Americans themselves before any other," he said.
"The Americans are the so-called advocates of human right and democracy, but, which aware people in the United States, Europe, Asia and any other country can believe that they are the true advocates of human rights while they don't object to the worst kind of violation of human rights in the occupied Palestine? Instead they support the Israeli state terrorism," President Khatami said.
"All know that the advocacy of human rights and democracy cannot conform with the current US policies, on the one hand, and the policies followed by the naive US politicians will sow animosity against the United States in the hearts of the Muslim nations and the freedom-loving nations in the region," he said.
"In fact the US politicians are taking steps against the American interests to pit the American people against the oppressed nations and freedom loving people," he said.
"The American people is expected to ask their own officials how much they should pay for the wrong policies of the US administration? the president said.
"The American nation has the right to question their administration to what extent terrorists were responsible for the dreadful terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and to what extent the wrong policies of the United States were responsible? he asked.
The American people have the right to ask the US administration why they sacrifice their interests for the wrong policies of supporting the state terrorism and tyrannical regime of Israel, he said.
