Khatami, Karzai discuss Afghanistan on phone

 
     
 

     

     Tehran, Jan 14, IRNA -- Iran's President Mohammad Khatami on monday discussed on phone the ongoing situation in Afghanistan with the head of that country's interim government, Hamid Karzai.

 
 

     The Iranian president stressed Tehran's support for the interim Afghan government and called on world countries to assist in the rehabilitation of the war-ravaged country "without interfering in its internal affairs."
     Khatami described Iran "a friend and brother" of Afghanistan and stressed the Islamic Republic's will to cooperate with its interim government.
     He hoped that "the age of the great Afghan nation's ordeals would end and they could move on the track toward progress under peace and unity and forget their past pains."
     Karzai described Iran as a "friendly and brotherly" country to Afghanistan with "religious and lingual commonalties among many others."
     He also thanked the Iranian nation and the government for their "moral and material assistance" to Afghanistan.
