Tehran, May 29, IRNA -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami Tuesday night here stressed the importance of harmony between the media and public opinion.
Speaking at the launching ceremony for the newly opened IRIB Jaam-e-Jam 3 satellite TV channel, he said: "If public opinion and the actuations of leaders of the country do not go hand in hand they cannot work as a team."
He added: "This does not mean that the IRIB and the government are not fulfilling their guidance role in society, but we should ascertain what the people's thoughts and requests are in order to fulfil them without delay.
The media should not be authoritative and dictatorial when trying to convey their message to the public since they deal with culture and the language of culture is one of fondness, reason, and persuasion, said Khatami.
The president further pointed out that the language of television should also be one of "persuasion, inspirational, consultative, hope-inspiring, objectively critical and opinion-soliciting."
Terming the current era as the era of "information and communications," he said that only media outlets that are able to elicit public trust in them can succeed.
The head of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution added: "If people do not trust the media or there is no interaction among them, efforts to expand the media would be meaningless.
IRIB-Jaam-e-Jam 3 programs via Asiasat will be broadcast 24 hours to audiences in Asia and Oceania in both Farsi and English.
IRIB-Jaam-Jam 2 and 1 started broadcasting five years ago and is now viewed by audiences in Europe, North America, North Africa and the Near East.
