President receives Iraqi foreign minister

 
 

 

 
 

         Tehran, Sept 29, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said on Sunday that Iran and Iraq experienced a bitter history in bilateral relations and hoped that Iran's detente policy would help resolve the problems remaining in the way of developing relations.
         In a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri, President Khatami said that there is a consensus in the international community opposing military action against Iraq and hoped that the US officials would respect global consensus against waging war on Iraq.           
 
 

         President Khatami said that the Zionist regime is exploiting the current situation after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States to step up its brutal attacks in occupied Palestinian territories.
         "Israel which has stockpiled the dreadful weapons of mass destruction with the full support of the United States," Iranian president said.
         President Khatami said that the Islamic Republic of Iran calls for the Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction and urged the regional states to do their best to restore peace, understanding and security in the region.
         He welcomed Iraqi admission of UN arms inspection team and said that Iraq should respect every aspect of the international criteria in a bid not to give any pretext to others to exploit the situation. 
         The president called for Iraqi contribution to help ease the crisis and reduce the threats to the entire region.
         President Khatami said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is interested in Iraq's territorial integrity, freedom and development adding that Iraq should do its utmost to win the trust of neighboring states and help regional stability.
         Sabri appreciated Iran's stance opposing military action against Iraq and said that possible attack on Iraq has been designed by the Zionists to inflict blow on all the Islamic nations.
         The foreign minister hoped that UN arms inspectors would do their job in line with the requirement of the Security Council and bring peace and security for the Iraqi people and the entire nation.
         He said that Iraqi president agreed to allow in the UN arms inspection team owing to the call by Iran and other Islamic states.
         Sabri hoped that the UN arms inspection team's return to the region would also lead to the dismantling the Zionist regime's nuclear arms arsenal.
         He said that Iraqi leadership is willing to open new horizon for relations with Iran.
