     Bishkek, April 29, IRNA -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami here on Monday warned against the possible emergence of new crises in the region.
     Addressing the Kyrgyz Chamber of Representatives, he voiced Iran's readiness to counter any instability in the region in order to reduce regional tensions and also to prevent new crises from arising.
     "We believe that the region can and should be kept far away from turning into a center for competition and conflict of interest of big powers," he said, stressing on expansion of friendly cooperation among the regional states.
     He further briefed the audience on the Islamic Republic of Iran's key role in the maintenance of peace and tranquility in the entire region.
     The Iranian president underlined the need for states to refrain from participating in the arms race and called for a region far from weapons of mass destruction.
     The principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran's regional policy stress ending of the massacres of innocent people in occupied Palestine and restoration of rights of the Palestinians, stability and construction in the war-torn Afghanistan, expansion of constructive cooperation with neighboring states, promotion of bilateral and multilateral cooperation among Central Asian states, a regional detente policy and principles of good neighborliness and mutual respect, President Khatami stated.
     In today's world, more than at any other time, there is a dire need for freedom, justice and peace, he added.
