Bushehr, Jan 27, IRNA -- Spokesman for Iranian Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) Khalil Mousavi said here Monday that Iran as a member of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) abides by all the provisions of agreements on non-proliferation of nuclear energy.
He told lRNA that with coming on stream of Bushehr power plant ,000 mega watts of electricity will be added to the country electricity distribution network.
He also put the cost of the construction of the power plant around dlrs 850 million of hard currency in addition to rls 200 billion. He reiterated that based on accord between Tehran and Moscow, the responsibility lies with Russia for construction of the Bushehr plant until it starts operation, "at which time the plant management will be handed to Iranian experts." Over 750 Iranian personnel are enrolled in expert training and will take over the plant management when it comes on stream," Mousavi underlined. He also expressed satisfaction over the quality of work performed by Russian personnel in construction of the power plant, adding "currently over 1,000 Russian experts are working on the project." Mousavi said the production of nuclear energy in addition to its contribution to cleaner environment is also justified economically compared to consumption of fossil fuel in a 30-year period. He said given that many developed countries are using nuclear power, "it is the inalienable right of Iran to embark on peaceful use of nuclear energy." Meanwhile, Director General of the IAEA Mohamed El Baradei has described as 'good' the agreement between Russia and Iran to return to Russia spent nuclear fuel from the Bushehr nuclear power plant. El-Baradei told a news conference at the Itar-Tass headquarters last week that he would visit Iran on February 25 to discuss all aspects of the Bushehr nuclear power plant construction project. Some countries have expressed concern over Iran's nuclear potential and they have been urging it to enhance the transparency of its nuclear programs, El Baradei said. He plans to urge Iran to join the additional protocol to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. The IAEA has encountered no problems at negotiations with Tehran. "A number of facilities is under construction in Iran and we would like to visit them to see that sufficient security measures have been taken," El Baradei said. Moscow and Tehran signed a contract to build the power plant back in 1995. Under amendments to the contract made several years later, Russia assumed turn-key commitments.
