Tehran, Jan 28, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi here on Tuesday expressed the hope that UN weapons inspectors would be given more time to complete their inspections to determine if Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.
"UN weapons inspectors have to use their common sense and exhaust all diplomatic ways of dealing with the Iraqi problem," he stressed.
The spokesman also called on the Baghdad regime to show its good intentions and cooperate with the UN inspectors in order to avoid giving the US any pretext for attacking Iraq.
Chief UN arms inspector Hans Blix on Monday sharply criticized Iraq for not giving enough evidence on its past weapons of mass destruction programs, but did not corroborate US claims that Baghdad had rebuilt its arsenal.
Blix, addressing the UN Security Council after two months of inspections, outlined in detail the information Iraq failed to produce in the 12,000-page arms declaration it submitted to the council on
December 7 as mandated by Security Council Resolution 1441.
While stressing the omissions were serious, he nonetheless said they would not lead him to conclude Baghdad possesses weapons of mass destruction.
