Tehran, Jan 26, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi here on Sunday said that the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the efforts made by India and Pakistan to find a durable and long-lasting solution to the Kashmir issue. Speaking at his weekly press conference, Asefi stressed the need to bring peace and tranquility to the Kashmir region that will benefit the region as a whole. He said continued efforts by Indian and Pakistani officials to try to resolve the Kashmir issue and remove current tensions between the two neighboring countries are necessary in order to restore stability to the region.
Responding to the question of whether the Islamic Republic was ready to help resolve the Kashmir issue, the official stressed that Tehran will only mediate on the request of both sides.
"The Kashmir issue must be resolved within the framework of UN resolutions and primarily through negotiations and consultations between the officials of Pakistan and India," Asefi stressed.
He said Iran and India have similar stances on the Iraq issue and oppose any US unilateral invasion on Iraq, believing that the issue against Iraq should be resolved through enforcement of UN resolutions.
Asefi, however, made it clear that Tehran supports the disarmament of Baghdad, but that the world should exhaust all available diplomatic channels and possibilities to achieve the objective.
