       Tehran, Nov 27, IRNA -- President Seyed Mohammad Khatami addressing the mourning ceremony held here on Tuesday night commemorating Imam Ali's (AS) martyrdom anniversary said, the rule of believers in God  respected man as a free creature granted with human rights even prior to the establishment of economic justice in the community.
       In an address to the congregation of thousands of mourners gathered at the late Imam Khomeini's mausoleum, the president added, "Imam Ali's (AS) desired community of justice is one in which the oppressed might feel safe to face the offender and claim his violated rights without any fear."
       He underlined that the human respect and freedom, under the reign of Imam Ali (AS) was not only limited to his supporters, but his serious opponents were also subject to such a respect and human rights, unlike any other ruling body in the course of history.
       "As per available historical documents, no one was ever called into swearing allegiance to Imam Ali (AS) by himself, but rather let them come up with their own decision. He never opposed anyone, unless his reign was threatened," he added. 
       The president pointed out, "In view of the great significance of justice in economic affairs and people's earning of life under the rule of Imam Ali (AS), a number of the high officials turned against him."
       "Imam Ali (AS), determined to reclaim the violated rights of the oppressed even if the gained proceeds had been allocated to cover their wives dowry, started tackling the offenders," he added.
       According to President Khatami, Imam Ali (AS) believed that man is entitled to live a comfortable life to have the opportunity to developing his morals, while poverty deprives him of such a chance.
       Referring to the issue of Palestine, the president said, "In the name of human rights, we are determined to claim the violated rights of Palestine."
       He added, "We have neither interfered with their domestic affairs, nor do we find them in need of any such interference."
       The president pointed out, "Given that today the Palestinians have come to recognize themselves, no regional sustained peace will ever be materialized unless their rights are officially restored and respected."
       He said that the noble nation of Iran is determined to observe the upcoming Qods Day with glory, while it will announce its full support for the oppressed nation of Palestine.
       He pointed to Imam Ali (AS) as the `Constant Martyr of the History', who is beyond time, place and the history and said that the people who are limited to the material world of their own era might never get to know all the aspects of his being and character. 
       President Khatami underlined, "Imam Ali (AS) is not only a model to be followed by individuals, but we are determined to take a decisive measure and develop a religious democracy in the Islamic Republic of Iran in the name of God, the Prophet (AS), Imam Ali (AS) and his descendants."
       "Under the current sensitive circumstances, we are in dire need to get fully acquainted with the character of Imam Ali (AS)," he concluded.
