Tehran, Oct 29, IRNA -- A group of British women MPs here on Monday met and conferred with their Iranian counterparts on women's issues.
The British group, headed by Labor MP Phyllis Starkey, arrived here yesterday for a four-day visit in response to an invitation by Iranian MP Fatemeh Khatami.
During the meeting, in which Ms Khatami was also present, she referred to Tehran-London ancient ties and stressed that the Islamic Republic's foreign policy is based on establishment of ties with all countries on the basis of mutual respect, common interest, confidence-building and the policy of detente.
Briefing her British counterparts on the latest political and social status of women and youth in the Islamic Republic, she said the Iranian women and youth have been active in various political, economic, cultural, scientific and sports areas since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Ms Khatami further expressed her satisfaction with the great increase in number of female students at the Iranian universities and scientific olympiads.
Meanwhile, Azam Naseri-Poor, another Iranian MP, said that a large number of drafts and bills concerning women's issues have been approved during the past two decades.
She further called for exchange of visits between the two countries women MPs and underlined the need for establishment of closer cooperation between the two countries' parliaments.
Expressing satisfaction with her current visit to Tehran, Ms Starkey lauded Iran's active and constructive role in anti-drug and anti-terrorism campaigns. She also praised Iran's support for the Afghan central government.
The British MP underlined the need for further exchange of views between the Iranian and British parliamentarians.
She said her visit to Tehran was aimed at becoming familiar with the rich Iranian culture and paving the way for promotion of parliamentary relations between the two countries, particularly between the two states' women MPs.
The current visit of the British MPs is a follow-up to the visit of an Iranian Majlis delegation to London in May this year.
Other members of the delegation include Starkey's Labour colleague, Julie Morgan, Conservative MP Angela Watkinson and Sandra Gidley of the Liberal Democrats.
