Tehran, Aug 28, IRNA -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami Wednesday vowed to work toward passage of a bill in Majlis that would strengthen his authority in the country as intended by the Iranian Constitution.
Khatami, speaking in a press conference, regretted that certain internal forces are trying to shrink his authority as president in direct contrast to constitutional provisions.
"I, as the president of the Islamic Republic, have two major duties to perform--hold the reins of government and see to it that the constitution is implemented," he said.
"However, I regret seeing the absolute right of the president of the Islamic Republic to supervise implementation of the constitution being occasionally denied," he added.
Khatami said that he was sorry to see his notices of specific instances of constitutional violations at times being ignored.
The president pointed out that during the presidency of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the current Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, a bill was approved in Majlis giving the president the right to act on controversial cases where issues demanded a minimum review by the administration in the national interest.
He regretted that he was not currently made to enjoy the privilege.
