Tehran, Aug 28, IRNA -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami here Wednesday confirmed reports that the information ministry had arrested a number of spies on various occasions through the pertinent government apparatus, but did not elaborate which sectors have been affected by the spies' activities. Khatami made the confirmation during a press conference held Wednesday, but refused to give details citing security considerations. He said he would not give further details until legal proceedings against suspected culprits have run their due course. The Iranian president, however, said he hoped the US would not act in the obvious direction it intended, stressing that any measure to the effect by the White House would prove detrimental to the region and to the world. Khatami said any insecurity in Iran, which is one of the most strategic countries in the Middle East, would ultimately affect the security of the entire region. He then warned US officials not to take any step that could eventually jeopardize their own interests. But, he added, Iran will try not to give its enemies any opportunity to come up with any pretext for an attack. "If attacked, the Iranian people and government stand ready to defend Iran's independence, integrity and interests to the last," he said decisively. |
