Iran condemned Sept 11 terrorist attack in US quickly, Khatami

 
 

 

 
 

       Tehran, Aug 27, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said on Wednesday that September 11 terrorist attack has been dreadful and Iran was one of those countries to condemn it immediately.
       Speaking at a press conference, he described terrorism as "ugly phenomenon" and said that nations exposed to pressure, restrictions and deprivation may resort to terrorism when they find no legal way out to reach their rights. "We don't accept terrorism," he said.

 
         "Contrary to the interests of the United States and that of the modern day, some extremist members of the US administration are contemplating on dangerous practices to which the world nations are opposed," he said.
       Asked about possibility of US aggression on Iraq, the president said, "We have incurred the highest losses from Iraq compared with other nations, but, we believe that interference in the affairs of other countries and resorting to force and bullying are more dangerous than the rogue states."
       "The policy being pursued by the current US administration is against the national interests of the Americans and will jeopardize US interests," President Khatami made it clear.
       Referring to US labelling of certain nations as axis of evil, the president said that they have miscalculated and there no good intention behind such labelling.
       "The United States cannot impose on the world what it wants by resorting to such labelling," the president pointed out.
       He reaffirmed Iran's foreign policy of detente and safeguarding national interests, independence and territorial integrity. 
       He termed as tragic what he called as "hatred which is coming out of the public tribunes".
       Answering a question about US military action against Iraq, the president said that if Washington embarks on such evil acts, it will be detrimental to the entire region and the whole world.
       He advised the US officials to abandon military plan against Iraq and urged them not to take an action which may harm other nations.
       On Iran's national security, the president said that unrest in Iran will entail widespread unrest in the entire region.
