       Tehran, Oct 28, IRNA -- Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi said here Monday that both Iran and Spain are of great importance in their own regions and the two sides' relations are based on mutual interests.
       The spokesman made the remarks at his weekly press conference ahead of Iranian President Mohammad Khatami' departure for Madrid on a three-day official visit.
       "Mutual ties between Tehran and Madrid have helped Iran expand its relations with European states in recent months," Asefi said. 
       "During Khatami's stay in Madrid, he is scheduled to meet with  several high-ranking Spanish officials, including King Juan Carlos. He will also attend the Spanish Senate and will deliver a speech at Complutense University of Madrid," he added.
       Asefi further stated that the two sides are to sign four economic documents, including one on joint investment as well as cooperation in the fields of customs, environment and tourism.
       They will also follow up negotiations on transfer of Iranian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe.
The documents are expected to take a major step toward expansion  of good ties between the two countries, he said. 
       President Mohammad Khatami will leave Tehran for Madrid on Monday to discuss bilateral ties as well as regional and international issues, including trade ties with the European Union.
       The trip highlights growing ties between the Islamic Republic and the European Union which is determined to sign a trade accord with Iran.
       The president is accompanied by a high-ranking politico-economic delegation including Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamal Kharrazi and Finance Minister Tahmasb Mazaheri.
       The visit is taking place at the invitation of King Juan Carlos and is in response to Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar's visit to Tehran in October 2000.
