Tehran, May 26, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami in a meeting here Sunday with the Palestinian Ambassador to Iran Salah Zawawi, said the Palestinian people's uprising in defense of their identity and territory is deep-rooted and nothing other restoring of their rights will stop this movement.
He said the Intifada is not dependent on others and 'enemies can not conceal the truth by putting the onus on foreign countries'.
He expressed dismay at the one-sided stance of the US regarding Zionist state terrorism in the occupied territories.
"The Zionist regime was built on aggression, occupation and atrocities and today is also continuing in the same vein." Khatami underlined.
"If the US withdraws its support from Israel, we will not witness such atrocities," the president said.
He further stated that the Iranian nations and government's support for the Palestinian people emanates from humanitarianism, religion and 'even nationalism'.
Iran has always supported and will continue to support the Palestinian people, Khatami said, adding, "This does not mean intervening in their internal affairs."
Khatami said world public opinion and intellectuals in many countries, specially in Muslim states have condemned Israeli state terrorism and declared their support for the Palestinian people.
He said the world has heard the voice of the Palestinians, although some US officials, under the influence of the Zionist lobby, have turned a blind eye to Israeli atrocities and have called the Palestinian people fighting for their freedom as acting against peace.
Peace will be restored when the right of the Palestinians to return to their homeland, right of self-determination and an establishment of independent Palestinian state with Holy Qods as its capital is recognized and implemented, Khatami declared.
Zawawi briefed Khatami on the latest developments in the region and the occupied territories.
