       Tehran, May 26, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi and his Emirate counterpart Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nahyan discussed here Sunday the developments in Afghanistan, and Middle East and international issues.
       The two sides stressed the resolve of high-ranking leaders and officials of Iran and UAE in strengthening bilateral ties between two nations and expansion of grounds for future cooperation.
       They also stressed economic and trade cooperation of the two countries' private and public sectors, including promoting investments aiming to diversification of trade and economic cooperation.
       They also highlighted the strengthening of the relations of the two countries as the determining factor in the peace and stability in the region.
       Kharrazi referred to confidence building policy of both sides as heralding a new chapter in relations.
He pointed to various fields of cooperation, adding "Iran and UAE share many ethnic, religious and cultural affinity effective in the future prospects."
       Al-Nahyan said Iran and UAE have had cordial ties for a long time.
       The prospects of bilateral cooperation is bright given the resolve of political leaders and the promise of existing potentials, he noted.
       He further welcomed the two countries' cooperation in goods smuggling and anti-drug trafficking as effective in eliminating the adverse effects of the menace in the region.
       He said participation of 150 companies in the UAE's trade exhibition in Tehran was positive steps in bolstering trade ties.
       He said his country welcomes holding such exhibitions aiming to further identify economic and trade potentials of two countries.
       The foreign ministers exchanged views on Afghanistan and Palestine and Sheikh Nahyan lauded Iran's efforts in helping reduce simmering tensions between India and Pakistan.
       Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nahyan arrived in Tehran on a two-day visit to discuss ways of promoting friendly ties and neighborly coexistence between the two Islamic countries as well as regional and international developments.
       He is carrying a written message from Emirati President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan for President Mohammad Khatami on ways of developing bilateral relations in the interests of the two countries. Sheikh Hamdan visited Tehran in July, 2001 at the head of a 20-strong delegation to deliver Sheikh Zayed's congratulatory message on President Khatami's re-election.
       Iran has been one of the major trade partners of the UAE. Based on the latest statistics, commercial transactions between the two sides last year surmounted to more than dlrs 3.13 billion.
       Dlrs 2.72 billion was that of imports by Iran from the UAE and dlrs 408 million that of exports by Iran to the Emirate.
