Kuala Lumpur, July 23, IRNA -- Iranian President Seyed Mohammad Khatami, on the second day of a three-day official visit of Malaysia, here on Tuesday stressed the need to maintain peace and stability in the world.
Speaking at a news conference here, Khatami said that Washington's hegemonic policies harm the interests of world nations and are self-defeating.
"If the US disregards moral principles and fair play in adopting policies on global issues, the demands of the global community will eventually force Washington policy-makers to revise their stances," he said.
"All governments must do their best to eliminate discrimination and humiliation which threaten global peace and security," Khatami said.
The Iranian president stressed that a war against terror must start by identifying the root causes of this heinous phenomenon which could be injustice, discrimination, prejudice, humiliation and violation of human rights, before it starts to work to eliminate these causes.
When asked about the prospects of Iran-US rapprochement, Khatami said Tehran will never accept Washington for as long as its policies continue to humiliate the Islamic Republic.
"The Iranian government and people seek peace and global co-existence and this applies to the US provided it changes its current policies and viewpoints towards the Islamic Republic," he pointed out.
During the press conference, Khatami raised issues of mutual interest to the two countries as well as regional and international topics.
