Kuala Lumpur, July 23, IRNA -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said Tuesday that he proposes "International Coalition of Peace" as a coalition not against any particular country or power, but one truly intending to eradicate violence, terrorism and war mongering.
Addressing a function organized by the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), he said the coalition for peace is an onerous task beyond the capabilities of governments.
"The pioneers of this coalition will be the scholars, intellectuals, civil institutions, international organizations, media and educational networks that will play active parts in the eradication of violence tainting the face of human thought, religions and cultures."
He called on the world community to help enrich the idea and explore its practical utility at all levels.
"I should also underscore that true peace can only be achieved in the light of justice," he added.
The President said Malaysia and Iran, though geographically far from each other, have a common understanding of history, culture and politics.
"Cultural diversity and digital communication have together created a diverse, and at the same time, more interdependent atmosphere," he told more than 300 participants comprising cabinet ministers, senior government officials, corporate leaders, academicians and NGOs. ISIS is the Malaysia's government think-tank.
He said coalition for peace is a way "we adopt under these circumstances.
President Khatami said it is an approach that facilitates dialogue and mutual understanding for the attainment of peace.
"This is an approach which seeks to deal not only with the effects but also with the causes of our problems, and thus seeks to identity and remove the underlying root causes of violence and conflict between governments and the non-governmental actors," he explained.
The President said resorting to war and to the formation of instant coalition is no more than an oversimplified solution to very complicated human problem.
"War is too simple a solution to the problems which have been accreted for years as a result of mutual understanding in tortuous past of interaction in the past.
"Such violent solution can never be sustained," he warned.
He noted that the common destiny of humankind will be ensured by the "coalition of peace."
In his speech, the President also called for an end to the genocide of the oppressed people of Palestine and for the restoration of their inalienable rights.
"We wish to caution the great powers against further interference in the affairs of this region and against the exacerbation of the flames of war," he added.
