Tehran, Sept 22, IRNA -- Iran's President Mohammad Khatami here Sunday stressed the readiness of Iran's armed forces to confront threats, and described any action against the Islamic Republic as 'extremely unwise'.
Khatami, speaking before an annual military parade to mark the beginning of Iran's Sacred Defense Week, said the forces are currently in a status of full readiness to thwart the ill wishes of "whoever is casting covetous eyes on the Islamic Republic."
He said the brilliant performance of Iranian troops to safeguard the country during the eight-year Iraqi imposed war of 1980-1988 had already deterred the enemies from planning or pursuing any ploys against the country.
The Iranian president lauded the self-sacrifice, bravery, and vigilance of Iranians to defend the nation and the territory, and said the Sacred Defense had proved these lofty characteristics of Iranians.
Khatami described the Sacred Defense as a "magnificent display of the realities of the Islamic Revolution," and "a case of great honor for Iranians in the history".
He also said the Sacred Defense had been a "most fabulous show of unity of Iranians" from various political inclinations, ethnic as well as religious belongings who had made a choice to defend the freedom and sovereignty of the nation in face of foreign aggression.
"Iran's defense capability, relying on a nation-wide backing, will support a dignified peace in the region, and will champion any campaign for an international peace based on justice in a world fraught with injustice, discrimination, aggression and violence," the Iranian president concluded.
