Kharrazi calls 'fruitful' UN talks on Iraq 'success' for world body

 
 

 

 
 

         Tehran, Sept 22, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi here Saturday evening said there had been fruitful debates at the UN General Assembly to present a peaceful solution to the issue of Iraq, and said the consensus of nations in that connection had been a success for the world body.
         Kharrazi, speaking upon arrival from New York, said the issue of Iraq had been the most important subject at the assembly, and voiced happiness that Iraq had accepted the return of UN arms inspectors. 

 
 

         The Iranian foreign minister, however, regretted that the US had ignored Iraq's submission to the international will over the issue of arms inspectors, and deplored Washington's persistence in beating the drum of war against Baghdad.
         Kharrazi further hoped the US would take the prevailing conditions in the world to adopt 'more realistic decisions' toward the issue of Iraq.
         He said the issue is still under discussion at the Security Council and expressed hope that Baghdad would have a reasonable reaction toward whatever outcomes of the debates.
         Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian foreign minister said the Islamic Republic had had positive performance regarding the Iraqi crisis.
         He said the world public opinion toward Iran is favorable, and highlighted the contribution of Iran's policy of detente to promoting the status of the Islamic Republic at the international level.
         Kharrazi further pointed out to his talks with EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana, and said EU's resolve to promote bonds with Iran manifests the fact that the Islamic Republic has had a positive role in regional developments.
         He said Iran and the EU are set to expand relations, and stressed that the Islamic Republic will never accept any preconditions to that effect.
