Kuala Lumpur, July 23, IRNA -- President Seyed Mohammad Khatami said here on Tuesday that the US has tied its interests with those of Israel and this has become more clear today than ever before.
President Khatami told academics and researchers at Malaysia's Institute of Strategic and International Studies that the US capital is Washington from within and Tel Aviv from outside.
Khatami described the coalition for war, adopted by US policy-makers, as a defeated policy. The US remains alone in helping the most brutal government, which is the Zionist regime, added Khatami.
Iran's president said US policies are adopted outside the country. "How long should the American people pay for the wrong policies of US policy-makers?" asked Khatami.
He said to live in a secure environment, the US should direct all its capacities towards ensuring lasting peace, removing poverty and discrimination and helping the people of the world.
He referred to terrorism as an ugly and sinister phenomenon and said the weapons stockpiled in the world are sufficient to destroy it.
He complained that the US military budget is highest in the world.
The president said that when a country attempts to preserve its independence, it is immediately accused of forming an 'axis of evil', whereas when its interests are in line with those of the most aggressive states, it is not labelled as an axis of evil, rather it is called a 'champion of peace'.
He expressed hope that Muslim nations would get closer through efforts by Muslim world scholars.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Khatami said religious government can respect people's rights and fulfill man's spiritual, materialistic and ethical needs.
He said his idea of dialogue among civilizations has been widely welcomed worldwide.
Dozens of books, treatises and essays have been written on the subject, Khatami said, adding, both man and history have been expecting such an idea for a long time.
Unfortunately, in the atmosphere created by the US, the coalition for peace failed to be taken into consideration, said the president.
The US, he said, possesses the greatest economic, scientific, security and intelligence power and is today dragging the world towards a war with full rage.
Campaign against war needs changes in viewpoints on man and the world and policy-makers should be forced to hear the voice of logic, said the Iranian president.
Khatami said the key to Muslim world problems is scientific, technological and managerial might.
He said there should be efforts to absorb knowledge and technology instead of being mere consumer of western goods.
