Tehran, July 22, IRNA -- Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Monday that the change in Washington's foreign policy has made the United States unreliable.
He told reporters that Washington's current policy follow the parameters which have nothing to do with the US national interests and national security.
"As long as American national interests were effective in the US administration's policy making, there had been some flexibility and realism in US policies," Zarif said.
"In the wake of September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, Israel has regained its decisive role in US policy-making due to the efforts made by Ariel Sharon. Currently, the US policy has been driven from honoring American national interests to the war-mongering strategy of the Zionist regime," Zarif said.
"Since Israeli interests became effective in Washington's policy-making, US foreign policy toward the Islamic Republic of Iran has undergone a dramatic change," Zarif said.
He said that the US had already pursued its goals through the international organizations, but, currently it upholds the military and economic leverage in the wake of September 11 events.
Zarif said that the United States has decided to reinforce its unilateral approach on global issues, while, the European nations believe in multi-lateral approach.
He said that US and the European policies differ. He referred to the row over Kyoto Environment Protocol and the US plan to attack Iraq as examples of disagreements between the US and the European nations.
"Even though the US may take unilateral action in the short-term irrespective of the international community's wishes and its negative consequences, such an approach cannot last long due to domestic, economic and international situation," he said.
"Unilateral US action on international issues will trigger serious and practical opposition from the international community which may lead to a shift in US policy," Zarif said.
He said that hostility to Islam will jeopardize international security adding that the Islamic nations would follow their goals through the United Nations.
He said that the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has successful experience in helping solve the crisis in Bosnia-Herzegovina and promoting dialogue of civilizations in cooperation with the United Nations adding that the Islamic nations would take active part in the international organizations to promote their own objectives in the international community.
Zarif has been assigned to head of Iranian Mission to the United Nations and permanent ambassador to the United Nations.
