Kuala Lumpur, July 22, IRNA -- Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said on Monday Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on visiting Iranian President Seyed Mohamad Khatami and they had discussed issues of bilateral interest.
He said Dr Mahathir had fruitful discussions with the President and both of them showed keen interest in strengthening relations between the two countries.
"The two countries have been maintaining a very cordial relationship for a long time," he told newsmen after the meeting between both leaders, at the five-star Mandarin-Oriental hotel, which President Khatami is staying.
Syed Hamid said Dr Mahathir and President Khatami had also touch on various bilateral issues in particular the Islamic world in their discussion.
"They also discussed ways to enhance bilateral ties that could benefit the Islamic world and how Islamic countries could work together to acquire knowledge," he said.
In this respect, he said both leaders agreed that there must be stability and economic progress in Islamic countries.
Syed Hamid said the discussion also touched on the issue of terrorism and the crisis in West Asia, involving the Palestinians.
