Tehran, July 20, IRNA -- Majlis Speaker Mehdi Karroubi here on Saturday called on the global community, the European Union members in particular, to contribute to Afghan reconstruction.
Karroubi told the visiting Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Committee of the European Parliament Elmar Brok that Iranian government supports the interim government of Afghanistan.
He urged all the European political, cultural and scientific personalities to exert pressure on rulers of the occupying regime of Israel.
He hailed the stances of the European Union in support for the Muslim Palestinian people and said that undoubtedly, the systematic genocide of the defenseless Palestinian people with the all-out support of the US pursued by the Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, has not only left the Middle East issue unresolved but has also made it further complicated.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian speaker said religious democracy and establishment of government on the basis of rationality and collective sense and determination has been the demand of the overwhelming majority of the Iranian people.
He said majority of Iranian people believe in Islam and naturally, religious democracy is different with what is customary in the West.
Karroubi went on to say that exchange of visits by Iranian and European parliamentary delegations would be effective in expansion of two-way ties. He said that obviously, growing contacts and mutual understanding would remove many ambiguities caused by hostile propaganda.
Brok for his part praised the developments and efforts underway in Iran for the establishment of democracy and rule of law.
He said developments in Iran are fast and complicated and definitely, one can not judge them from outside.
He asked for continued exchange of parliamentary delegations between Iran and the European Union given the common grounds for mutual cooperation.
He welcomed cooperation with Tehran on the reconstruction of  Afghanistan and supported the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
