Tehran, May 22, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi here Wednesday described the recent charges of the US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as well as the report of the US Foreign State Department on Iran's alleged support for terrorism as 'baseless and outside the scope of US authority'.
Asefi said raising such charges had been a politically-motivated approach towards the issue of terrorism.
He said the reptition of backward and unconventional behavior on the part of the US indicates that Washington is not aware of international developments.
Asefi said the charges were in line with the US hostile policy towards the Islamic Republic, and reiterated that raising such accusations were meant to whitewash Washington's repeated failures in pushing ahead its foreign policy, particularly with regards to the Middle East developments.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that the US is trying to take advantage of the September 11 incident to impose its illogical views on other countries.
Asefi said the US support for the Zionist regime manifested Washington's double-standard and selective approach to the issue of terrorism.
He stressed that the Islamic Republic as a major victim of terrorism will always remain committed to stage an all-out, fundamental and non-selective campaign against terrorism within the frameworks of the United Nations, and will not take orders from any country to that effect.
Asefi said Palestinians had a right to struggle for liberating the occupied territories as a legitimate resistance, and rejected the idea of equating resistance with terrorism. He stressed that such comparison was an example of presenting an inverted definition of terrorism and supporting the phenomenon.
