Tehran, Jan 20, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami in a message on Monday voiced regret over the increasing insecurity in the world, stressing that security, as the need of all human beings, must be recognized as a right of every society.
Khatami, in a message to an international conference entitled "The Outlook of Security and Cooperation in Central Asia and the Caucasus", said international relations since the collapse of the Soviet Union have become complicated, and this have caused insecurity throughout the world.
He refuted as unacceptable speculations that only a certain part of the human society should enjoy security.
"This depicts colonial aspirations that divided the world into the poor and the rich, and the developed and the underdeveloped," he said.
"Security is the prerequisite for development, and development promotes security."
Khatami stressed that no development was possible without the establishment of security, and that no security would last without development.
He described the condition prevailing in the world, particularly in Central Asia and the Caucasus, as very sensitive, cautioning that the security and military viewpoint that has been adopted toward the developments in this region could threaten its political and economic progress.
"A restricted security approach to societies will sideline those societies, and this is a threat that will eventually jeopardize world security," Khatami added.
"The experience of Afghanistan being sidelined should never be repeated," he cautioned in his message that was read out at the conference by Deputy Foreign Minister for Central Asian Affairs Ali-Reza Moayeri.
Khatami further said that the nations of the region should struggle to promote political and economic development, stressing that this will be materialized through the expansion of regional cooperation.
Elsewhere in his message, the Iranian president said he expected the intellectuals to put forth approaches that would reinforce security and cooperation in the region.
