Tehran, Jan 19, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said on Sunday that the regional states are expected to explore ways out of the current crisis in the region and the Iraqi government should prove that it is fully complying with United Nations Security Council resolution.
In a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, President Khatami said that Iran opposes any unilateral war on Iraq and supports Iraqi territorial integrity.
He said that diplomatic efforts by regional states to stem war in Iraq is very useful and called for peaceful settlement of Iraqi standoff with the United Nations.
Referring to the US military build-up in the region, President Khatami said that regional states should exercise vigilance to prevent a situation which may expose Iraq to extortion from a certain power or dependence on it either with war or without war.
"Of course consultations and cooperation among regional states to take the initiative for settlement of the Iraqi crisis are indication of the maturity of the nations and the governments and nothing else," President Khatami declared.
The president said that the Zionist regime is taking advantage of the current situation in the region by intensifying its attacks against Palestinians adding that the international community should not forget what is going on in Palestine.
He said that a real peace will be achieved in the Middle East only by helping the Palestinians attain their own rights.
Al-Shara conveyed warm greetings from President Bashar al-Assad to President Khatami and called for coordination between Iran and Syria to help resolve the crisis.
He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has special status in Syrian foreign policy adding that nothing can effect Tehran-Damascus relations.
Al-Shara expressed concern about escalation of Zionist regime's crime in the occupied territories of Palestine and called for close cooperation of regional states to help settle the crisis through peaceful means.
Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi was also present in the meeting.
Al-Shara arrived in Tehran Saturday night for consultations and coordination for an upcoming visit to Tehran of President Bashar al-Assad.
