Brussels, Nov 18, IRNA -- Iranian Foreign Minster Kamal Kharrazi held 45-minutes of talks with Dr Javier Solana, EU High representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, in Brussels Monday noon.
Kharrazi told reporters after the meeting that he discussed with Solana Iran-EU relations, the situation in Iraq, the role that the EU has to play to avoid a new war in the region, and the role the EU can play to encourage Iraq to comply fully with the UNSC resolutions.
He said Iran and the EU are going to launch trade and cooperation talks on 12 December.
"We are going to engage in a comprehensive constructive dialogue with the EU. It is quite natural for different parties to have their own political position. We don't mind to talk on all issues including the Middle East affairs, human rights, terrorism.
"We hope that talks between the Iran and the EU would lead in the near future to an agreement on economic cooperation," he said.
Replying to a question on the possibilities of a war against Iraq, Kharrazi said, "First of all we have to do our best to avoid any war in Iraq. But if it happens, we naturally are looking at our national interests. But talking about war at this stage is not necessary at all," he added.
Kharrazi arrived in Brussels Monday morning for talks with top EU and Belgian officials on the progress of relations between the EU and Iran.
He is also expected to meet the President of the EU Commission Romano Prodi, Commissioner for Trade Pascal Lamy, Commissioner for Foreign Relations Chris Patten, Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel and the President of the Belgian Parliament Herman de Croo during his two-day stay in Brussels.
