Tehran, June 18, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said on Tuesday that governments are required to enter into international competition to boost their economic strength.
Addressing the Iran-Turkey Trade Commission, President Khatami said that the governments should foster bilateral and regional trade cooperation to help improve the economy of their nations.
"The modern period is the era of interdependence of human communities which brings common ground for progress, interest and security of all nations," President Khatami said.
The Iranian president said that national economy and industry are not independent of the the regional and international trade development.
He said that economy and industry currently depend on international criteria and expertise adding that national policy-making on economy and industry should observe the latest standards in terms of quality of their industrial outputs.
President Khatami said that to keep up with the global economy, every country should modernize its national economic, industrial and social structures.
He said that Iran and Turkey have extensive capacity to develop economic cooperation adding that the economies of the two countries are strong enough to adopt new methods to build a mutual 'complementary economy'.
He said that the government has channelled large investments to infrastructural development and paved the way for the private sector involvement and foreign investment which brought bright prospect for Iranian economic and industry.
The president said that Iran is keen to develop economic cooperation with neighboring states adding that Iran gives preference to Turkey in this respect to help develop regional trade.
He said that the current level of dlrs 1.2 billion trade is not enough taking into account the large extent of economic capability of Iran and Turkey. The figure should go high, he said.
President Khatami pointed to start of the project to pump Iranian gas to Turkey last winter as symbol of strategic cooperation of the two countries economies which will serve peace and friendship and welfare of the two nations.
He said that Iran and Turkey would also cooperate in the field of transport, tourism and promoting 'dialogue of civilizations'.
The president said that Iran and Turkey are the founding members of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), the Group of Eight Developing Nations as well as the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and are keen on fostering regional cooperation with the Central Asian and Caucasian nations.
He said that there is strong political resolve on part of Iran and Turkey to help rebuild the war-ravaged neighboring country of Afghanistan and help the Afghan people lead a honorable life.
