Tehran, July 18, IRNA -- Secretary-General of the Anti-Drug Campaign Headquarters Ali Hashemi said here on Thursday that a global determination is needed to fight drugs if the battle is to be won.
Hashemi further told Elmar Brok, the visiting chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, that Iran has adopted necessary measures in its battle against drugs which include short-term training courses for anti-drug special forces and sophisticated technical and surveillance equipment to monitor domestic and international drug smuggling.
He said mutual and multilateral scientific and educational coordination with European governments as well as with non-governmental international organizations to fight drug smuggling are among the programs being pursued by the government in its anti-drug campaign.
He added that regular exchanges of information and experiences in the legal field and adoption of transparent laws to fight drug smugglers and money launderers are among the areas Iran is interested in cooperating with the Foreign Relations Commission of the European Parliament.
The Iranian official emphasized that Iran, as one of the pioneers in the campaign against drugs, has incurred tremendous expense in its anti-drug efforts.
In addition, he said, Iran has lost more than 3,000 of its forces in the battle against drug traffickers from neighboring Afghanistan and other regions who use Iran as a gateway to markets in Europe and the Persian Gulf.
He urged strong support for and international cooperation from foreign governments and international organizations with Iran in the latter's battle against drugs.
Brok, for his part, said drugs are the basic problem of all world communities. "It is not a national problem but one that affects all humanity," he said.
He lauded the Islamic Republic's efforts to fight drugs and said the European Union is ready to assist the country in any way it can in its efforts to curb drug smuggling.
