Tehran, Aug 17, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said here on Saturday that the Islamic Republic of Iran is pursuing a policy of detente, peace, dialogue based on mutual respect and non-intervention
in others' internal affairs.
Khatami told Iran's cultural attaches abroad that the prerequisites for promoting Islam and the revolution, so that they would serve as a model for other countries, are scientific and technological progress, overcoming backwardness and building a democratic working relations among various sections of the government.
He said, "Otherwise, our slogans would have a negative result." The president said democracy should turn into a global value and spirituality should be incorporated in dialogue among civilizations.
He said the two issues (democracy and spirituality) are the backbone of the future.
He added that strong presence on different scenes is among the most important national interest -- a call which is the same as the wishes of any other nation. He said the cause is consistent with the aspiration of the Iranians.
The President said, "We do not want power for acquire hegemony, seize others' properties and impose our wishes on others, since, on the one hand, such a power is inconsistent with Islamic standards Iranian identity and, on the other, not accepted by the world."
He said freedom, security and justice should be accepted in their entirety.
Security is essential for freedom, while freedom and justice are synonymous with security, said Khatami, adding that peace, freedom, security and justice are all close to the Iranians and mankind.
The president said freedom, justice, independence and peace are among other principles of Iran's national interests. He said Iran preaches justice at the international level and calls for removal of humiliation, suppression, and differences, which are the main causes of clashes and wars worldwide.
He said in the absence of independence one cannot embark on the road to social prosperity.
Independence, he pointed out, does not mean keeping aloof from the world, rather, it means preventing others' intervention and making decisions based on national interests so as to restore social order.
Khatami said support for the oppressed is engrained in the Iranian nation's history as well as its characteristics and Islamic behavior and attitude.
The support, however, is not intervention in others' affairs - for instance strengthening the opposition and affiliated forces with the aim of creating problems for governments, added Khatami.
The president said, "We reaffirm our opposition to injustice anywhere in the world and also any move towards suppressing freedom and the right of self-determination of nations; we believe that such moves cannot successfully meet its objectives."
The Islamic Revolution, he said, came into being by relying on the public and their growing awareness as well as the wise leadership of the late Imam Khomeini. "We are proud that the move was not affiliated to anybody," announced Khatami.
President Khatami said the force emanating from the people, does not need to be affiliated and, if it is, it is corrupt.
"If we are for independence and non-interference of others, we too should adhere to it ourselves," said Khatami, adding that from this angle, Iran adopts its foreign policy in the name of the nation and freedom to defend itself against the most hated and unfounded groups aiming to undermine Iran's establishment, as intervention and is against it."
He said that unfortunately, in the contemporary world, any move  endangering interests of certain powers, is subject to variety of allegations. He added that to justify their suppressive acts, the powers attribute the moves to a government so as to suppress both the move and the government they claim has supported it.
"At the global level, we call for ties which are free from any humiliation, injustice, suppression and difference; we will try to present our ideas and propagate them so as to win the support of the world governments and people with an aim to establish an equity-based international system devoid of any ambition," announced Khatami.
If a nation and government rely on themselves and strengthen national interests, can resist this in the long run and become confident that they are being heard in the world, Khatami added.
The Iranian president said western civilization would not be removed through directives or coups. "We should admit that one can grasp positive points of it (western civilization), while refusing to surrender unilaterally to all its values," he added.
Khatami said a critical approach can be useful in forging further understanding, blocking intervention in each others' affairs and showing respect.
He called on all the well wishing scholars in the West and Islamic countries to find ways to save man from two dangerous poles, which push the world towards annihilation.
He said the US foreign policy is influenced by the Zionists'  lobbies.
He said that unfortunately, today the world is facing a situation unprecedented in history. He added that it is atmosphere of war and war-mongering. However, he commented, man's conscience cannot be ignored. One should try to negate any form of violence through dialogue among civilizations and coalition for peace, he urged.
Khatami condemned any kind of intervention in others' affairs and said, "Iran had been victim of crimes, terror and violence of the Taliban; it did not accept existence, method and attitude of the government and den of corruption, but at the same time opposed US intervention to upset order there (in Afghanistan).
"Today, we are opposed to US intervention in Iraq, despite having problems with that country, because the US tries to harmonize the world by force; this is a bad practice that would prevail the world," Khatami objected.
Foreign intervention in the name of nations to secure interests  of big powers is a 'big insult' to human beings, said Khatami, adding that it would destabilize security in all countries.
He thanked Iran's representative offices abroad for safe-guarding Iran's interests and building a solid link with other countries. He said Iran's representative offices abroad should take the lead in defending the rights of Iran and Iranians all over the world.
"Each Iranian -- with any outlook -- should consider Iran's representative offices abroad as a safe haven," concluded Khatami.
