Muscat, Feb 17, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi here Monday said that the fate of the Middle East, in the face of US threats to attack Iraq, depended on friendly cooperation among regional countries.
In a meeting with his Omani counterpart, Yousef bin Alawi, the Iranian minister also reiterated Iran's condemnation of a probable US attack on Iraq, saying Washington sought to dominate the Middle East region.
"The Iraq crisis has caused the worry of all regional countries and although the Iraqi government is indefensible given the dark file of that regime in mistreating its neighbors, any military attack on that country is condemned since America is trying to dominate the region," he said.
"America, by creating crisis, is trying to somersault the Israeli crimes into oblivion and we should not let the oppressed Palestinian people be forgotten," Kharrazi added.
He said he was satisfied with the Islamic Republic's relations with the Persian Gulf littoral states. "The fate of the region is tied to friendly cooperation among these countries," he added.
The Omani foreign minister hailed Iran's role in settling regional crises and called for using the country's "capacity to avert a war and its malignant consequences".
Iran is the solid political and economic pillar of the region, Alawi said, adding Oman is keen to use Iran's economic and trade capabilities to bolster cooperation in the Persian Gulf region.
He also outlined Muscat's views on regional developments, saying "Oman intends to hold regular consultation with Tehran" on these issues.
Kharrazi called for "holding regular joint economic and political committees" between the two countries to strengthen their ties.
"The two countries can take wider steps to benefit from their economic capacities in transport, transit and energy fields," he added.
