Kuala Lumpur, Oct 16, IRNA -- The current threat of war against Iraq by the United States is part of the latter's intentions to create an "empire" and become the most powerful country in the world, two social activists said on Wednesday.
Malaysian Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (MPPNW) Chairman Ronald McCoy said a war against Iraq would be a "coming out party for the most powerful nation in history which is bent on establishing a Pax Americana, or an American empire."
"What we are witnessing today has long been recorded in history, about the arrogance of power and the lure of empire," he said at a public forum on the topic Iraq: Is War the Answer?
The forum was organized by the MPPNW and the International Movement for a Just World (JUST).
JUST President Dr Chandra Muzaffar said that besides American hegemony the war against Iraq is a possibility because of the US wish to control oil resources and the need to ensure that Israel, its strongest ally in the Middle East, remains the dominant power in the region.
"There are also domestic reasons, as US President George Bush will be facing Congressional elections in November and `bashing some people out there' has often proven to win votes," he said.
Chandra said the US is saying (Iraqi president) Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and there is a need for a change in regime.
"But Saddam was a bigger tyrant when he gassed the Kurds and killed the Iranians.
"At that time Iraq was with the US so the US thought there was no need for a regime change," he added.
