Kiev, Oct 16, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said here on Tuesday night that Iran and Ukraine favor development and progress as well as the restoration of global peace and security. Khatami told senior Iranian and Ukrainian officials that cooperation between Tehran and Kiev should be a model of efforts for establishing peace and security in the region and the world. Tyranny, war, humiliation and discrimination were imposed on man in the last century, said Khatami, adding that man's conscience and nations' historical wishes are in line with the campaign against root causes of terror, unilateral and bullying tactics and further attention to peace and justice at both national and international levels. The president said relations between Tehran and Kiev are aimed at safeguarding global peace and security and are not against any country. He said the Islamic Republic of Iran calls for promotion of relations with Ukraine, in the economic domain in particular. He added that Tehran-Kiev joint venture project to manufacture Antonov 140 planes is an important step towards mutual scientific and industrial cooperation. He expressed hope that implementation of the project would be accelerated by removing barriers and the two-way cooperation in the fields of science and research will be promoted. Khatami said Iran is ready to cooperate with Ukraine in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. He said efforts should be made to have the US bow to the call of public opinion for peaceful settlement of the Iraqi issue. He added that ongoing commotion should not put due rights of the oppressed Palestinian people and crimes of the Zionist regime into oblivion. Kuchma, for his part, welcomed the expansion of Tehran-Kiev cooperation in different fields within the framework of international organizations. He said international crises should be solved through the United Nations. He underlined reliance on dialogue among civilizations in the current world. The Iranian and Ukrainian sides at the meeting exchanged views on Tehran-Kiev joint economic commission's performance in the fields of airplane manufacturing, trade, agriculture and transfer of Iranian gas to Europe via Ukraine. |
