Tehran, Oct 14, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi here Monday hoped the reports to the effect that a US military commander would be installed in Baghdad to rule over Iraq would be 'merely baseless rumors'. Asefi, who was speaking at his weekly press conference, said any plan to install a military commander in Iraq might be part of US psychological war. "Those who raise such plans are not familiar with the conditions of the region, and never know that they cannot attain their objectives through such issues," he said. |

Asefi stressing that the Islamic Republic believes all diplomatic solutions to solve the crisis have not yet been tried, added that the crisis must be resolved through a peaceful approach 'at the least costs'. He further reiterated Iran's opposition to a military attack on any Muslim country, and highlighted Iran's calls for a more comprehensive debate with countries of the region, particularly Iraq's neighbors, regarding the issue of US anticipated attacks on the country. Asefi said Iranian officials had informed British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw during his visit to Tehran of such opposition 'even though there exists the need to make sure the Iraqi regime does not posses chemical, biological or any other kind of weapons of mass destruction'. He said hundreds of thousands of Iranians have fallen victim to Iraq's use of chemical weapons during its eight-year imposed war on the Islamic Republic, adding that for this not only Iraq, but also those who promoted the export of chemical weapons to Iraq, including the US, are responsible. Asefi also recalled an increase in Zionist atrocities against Palestinians in light of US anticipated attacks on Iraq, and called on the international community, particularly Muslim nations, not to let the Zionist regime misuse the issue of Iraqi crisis to push forward its own policies. |
