          Moscow, Jan 16 Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Russia and Iran favoured a diplomatic settlement of the Iraqi issue, it was announced here on Wednesday.
          Russian First Deputy Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Trubnikov and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mohsen Aminzadeh noted that Iraq should ulfill Resolution 1441 of the UN Security Council in order to find a comprehensive political and diplomatic settlement of the Iraqi problem.
          The high-ranking diplomats expressed the view at the Russian-Iranian consultations on the fight with international terrorism and regional security in Moscow on Wednesday. The sides called for the creation of a global system to counteract terrorism and new challenges and threats related to it under the aegis of the United Nations and the firm basis of the international law, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry told Itar-Tass.
          During the exchange of views on the situation in Afghanistan Moscow and Tehran confirmed the readiness to continue help the Afghan interim administration to restore the country.
          The sides stressed a central and coordinating role of the UN in the processes of political and economic restoration of Afghanistan.
          Trubnikov and Aminzadeh expressed concern over the growth of the drug production in Afghanistan and called for pooling international and national efforts to counteract a threat of drug trafficking from Afghanistan.
          The diplomats outlined the schedule of political contacts for 2003in general.
          The Iranian deputy foreign minister was received by Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, held talks with his deputies Alexander Losyukov and Alexander Saltanov and met with chairman of the State Duma Security Committee Alexander Gurov and CIS Executive Secretary Yuri Yarov.
          Mohsen Aminzadeh's visit to Moscow was an important step for strengthening Russian-Iranian relations and imparted a fresh impetus to the bilateral interaction on the main regional and international problems, the spokesman said.
