Tehran, Oct 13, IRNA -- Iran's Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh in Doha on Sunday said interconnection of gas networks in the Persian Gulf region is one of the areas of serious cooperation.
Addressing the 20th International Conference and Exhibition for the LNG, LPG and Natural Gas Industries (GASTECH 2002), Zanganeh said utilization of the regional countries' seasonal demand differences
for exchange of natural gas will be the least beneficial of this move. He pointed out that southern Persian Gulf countries have the highest demand for gas in their power generation sector to provide cooling in the hot months of the year, while the northern countries have similar rate of demand in the cold months to provide heating.
The minister said thus the peak consumption period at one side, provides the supply potential at the other, and as a result of network interconnections, optimal utilization of related investment will become possible.
He said through preparing the grounds for ever increasing cooperation, it is hoped that the region and the world would move towards embracing economic, social and environmental co-existence.
He added that Iran plays a constructive role, through its energy policies, in attaining global peace and sustainable energy security.
The minister said the Persian Gulf region, in a sense, is the world's energy hub. Like other regional blocks, he added, the Persian Gulf countries could launch massive cooperation in the area of energy policies.
He went on to say that as a result, unnecessary expenditures can be avoided, and the political, economic and cultural relations between the countries would be consolidated.
Zanganeh said that the liberalization of the regional countries' energy markets with stronger emphasis on natural gas markets and deregulation in this sector can enhance efficiency of the energy sector in their economics.
