| Tehran, Oct 13, IRNA -- Former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani here Sunday said the US was waging a 'psychological war' against Iraq by threatening to attack that country because of its alleged nuclear weapons plans. "America is waging this psychological war in order to undermine Iraqi morale and threaten the world against opposing the wishes of the US," Rafsanjani, who is the chairman of the arbitrative Expediency Council, said on the sidelines of a military war game. "America has not gone beyond a psychological war in the region since its forces are less than enough to start a war," he added. The former Iranian president also denounced a New York Times report that Washington wanted to install an American military-led government in Baghdad, led by commander of US forces in Persian Gulf, Tommy Franks. "This move is a mistake, which could lead to the creation of more resistance in the region, especially in Iraq," Rafsanjani said. "This is another psychological war of its type and America wants to say that 'I can go ahead to the extent of occupying Iraq and choosing a governor for that country'," he added. Rafsanjani also described Iran's military might as 'very high and good'. "The country's military strength has made an eye-catching progress compared with the past. This indicates that one cannot easily infiltrate into our defensive line," he said, adding "If the enemy becomes aware of our might, it will never dare to risk starting a face-off with us". US President George W. Bush has lumped Iran into an 'axis of evil' with Iraq and North Korea for allegedly trying to acquire weapons of mass destruction which Tehran rejects. |
