       Tehran, Oct 14, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami in a message on Monday called for the adoption of a joint strategy at the national, regional and international levels for campaign against smuggle of
illicit drugs.
       The message, read out by Secretary General of Iran's Drugs Campaign Headquarters Ali Hashemi at the 37th Annual Meeting of the United Nations Narcotic Drugs Sub-Commission on Illicit Drug Trafficking in the Middle East, referred to the sinister phenomenon of drug trafficking as a global dilemma and said there is no alternative to forging ahead with the anti-drugs campaign but to adopt joint strategy at the national, regional and international levels.
       He said that organized crimes is an intricate issue with diversified dimensions.
       He added that any strategy for campaign against drugs should take into account the most extensive, serious and expertise cooperation among countries as it cannot be implemented without global understanding.
       He said that Iran is engaged in comprehensive campaign against international criminal groups and drug smuggling gangs.
       He added that the problems threatening security and safety of global community would be solved only through cooperation among governments. The message specified that unilateral actions would not only fail to tackle problems but also make them further complicated.
       Khatami said what is of importance in eliminating this appalling calamity is to identify the root causes and definitely, injustice, political instability, foreign intervention, and financial and spiritual poverty can greatly influence drug smuggling in the region and the world.
       The president said Iran has always been striving to play an effective role in the settlement of crises so as to show that as an active member of the global community, it cannot be indifferent to the rights of nations and restoration of peace and stability as well as social well-being.
       The message said that Iran is ready to continue its effective role within the framework of joint international cooperation to encounter this major problem.
       He hoped that outcome of the meeting would result in the compilation of a dynamic strategy as well as practical and effective measures for fighting drugs, thus leading to stronger global cooperation.
