Tehran, Feb 13, IRNA -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad on Thursday called over phone for a special meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to discuss the Iraqi crisis. Malaysia, which takes over the OIC presidency from Qatar in October, has already announced its readiness to host the meeting of the 57-member Islamic organization during the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 24-25. Khatami reiterated Iran's rejection of the unilateral US policy of mulling a military attack on Iraq as he stressed Iraq's territorial integrity and urged Baghdad to succumb to UN resolutions. "Iraq must refrain from giving any pretext to war-mongers," the Iranian president said. Mahathir said Tehran and Jakarta held common views on the Iraq issue and renewed his country's objection to the war and its call for a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
"Members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and Non-Aligned Movement must voice their opposition to foreign interference in internal affairs of sovereign countries," he said as he renewed his country's readiness to host the special meeting of the OIC. Khatami also stressed the two countries' bilateral cooperation, including on oil and gas, and called for accelerated implementation of their agreements in this sector. Malaysian Petronas is currently carrying out joint development operations with European companies on Iran's oil and gas fields.
