        Tehran, Jan 12, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami and Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul on Sunday held talks on ways to prevent the outbreak of a new war in the region.
        Gul briefed the president on the outcome of his consultations with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Syria, Egypt and Jordan on the need for diplomatic solution to the Iraq crisis.
        President Khatami and Prime Minister Gul called for settlement of the Iraqi crisis and Iraqi compliance with the United Nations resolutions.
        Khatami and Gul voiced support for Iraq's territorial integrity and unified action by Islamic states to get over the current situation peacefully.
        President Khatami referred to the international campaign against terrorism and said that unilateral and military action by the US in the Middle East was meant to serve the Zionist regime.
        He hoped that the leaders of nations in the region would continue consultations to help settle the Iraqi crisis to save the Iraqi people and their own interests.
        President Khatami called for Tehran-Ankara security cooperation and said that Iran regards Turkish security as its own.
        He said that Iran and Turkey have special status to help safeguard peace and stability in the region which are prerequisite for development and progress.
        In the meantime, President Khatami extended congratulation to Prime Minister Gul on the Turkish new government and called for utilizing the extensive capacity for bilateral cooperation.
        Gul said that the Turkish people and government are willing to develop economic cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran adding that Turkey welcomes President Mohammad Khatami's proposal to hold dialogue of civilizations and press for detente at the international level.
        He said that if a new war breaks out in Iraq, it will bring adverse consequences for the whole region and the Iraqi people in particular.
        Prime Minister Gul extended an invitation to President Mohammad Khatami to visit Turkey.
