Tehran, Oct 6, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami on Sunday called for vigilance of Islamic nations to deal with the threats to which the Muslim world has been exposed. In a meeting with Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Abdelouahed Belkeziz, President Khatami said that the OIC's dialogue with the European Union (EU) is of significance. The president pointed to the problems Iraq created in the region in the past several years and said that the bigger threat has been posed by certain power which have attempted to bring about change in the destiny of a nation through military action. President Khatami said that Iran has pursued active diplomacy to thwart possible attacks on Iraq and encourage Iraq to comply with United Nations resolutions. He referred to the escalation of the Zionist regime's crimes in occupied territories and regretted that the crimes have been overshadowed by the Iraqi crisis. The president called for the Islamic states special attention to events in Palestine. President Khatami expressed deep concern about the US Congress' bid to recognize Beit-ul-Moqaddas as Israeli capital and described it as sign of the US insincerity and bias towards the Zionist regime. "The US move to recognize Holy Qods as Israeli capital is an affront to the great nation of Palestine and against the consensus of the Muslim and the Arab Nations," President Khatami said. The OIC and the Arab League (AL) and all the freedom-loving nations of the world are expected to strongly oppose such a move taken by the US, President Khatami said. Belkeziz briefed the president on the sensitive situation in the region and performance of the Jeddah-based OIC secretariat and its peace efforts at the international community. |
