Tehran, May 7, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said here on Tuesday that the most important service to Afghanistan is helping in rebuilding that country and Iran will spare no efforts in this connection.
Khatami, while receiving credentials of new Afghan Ambassador to Tehran Ahmad Mashahed, said the Afghan nation has left behind a difficult period and restoration of peace and calm in the country would hopefully prepare the ground for the return of all Afghan refugees to their home country from different parts of the world.
He said the Afghan people enjoy many merits and can attain their real status under a safe and free atmosphere.
Calling visit to Tehran of the Head of Afghan interim government Hamed Karzai, Khatami said Iran strives for restoration of peace in Afghanistan and for reconstruction of that country.
He expressed hope that Loya Jirgah, or the council of elders, would be formed in tune with the Afghan nation's demands so that permanent stability could be established there.
Mashahed conveyed Karzai's warm greetings to Khatami and appreciated Iran for its support as well as financial and spiritual assistance to the Afghan people during their resistance and defence era.
Touching on the historical, cultural and geographical bonds shared by Iran and Afghanistan, Mashahed said Tehran and Kabul share common responsibility towards their intertwined fate.
He re-invited President Khatami on behalf of Karzai to pay an official visit to Afghanistan and said the Afghan people are looking forward to welcoming Khatami in Afghanistan.
Khatami expressed hope to visit the country in the future.
