Kharrazi urges Kabul to bring assassins of Iranians to justice

 
 

 

 
 

       Tehran, August 6, IRNA -- On the eve of the fourth anniversary of the martyrdom of eight Iranian diplomats and an IRNA reporter Mahmoud Saremi in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan in 1998, Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi on Tuesday called for strong action by the Afghan government to bring to justice the assassins in the horrific crime.
       Kharrazi, in a letter to his Afghan counterpart Abdullah Abdullah, described the incident as a tragic event for the peoples of Iran and Afghanistan.

 
         The minister expressed the hope that senior officials of the Afghan transitional government will spare no efforts to bring to justice those responsible for the horrific crime and relieve the agony of the Iranian nation and the families of the martyrs in Mazar-i-Sharif.  
 

       August 7 is marked in Iran as the Journalists' Day to commemorate the martyrdom of IRNA correspondent, Mahmoud Saremi and eight other Iranian diplomats at Iran's consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif, northern  Afghanistan.
       They were slain in 1998 when Mazar-i-Sharif was overrun by the Taliban militia.
