Tehran, Dec 4, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami on Wednesday expressed hope that no military action would be taken against Iraq by the US although Washington is seeking pretexts to do so.
President Khatami said Iraq is expected to abide by the UN and UN Security Council resolutions to avoid eruption of such a catastrophe.
He told a group of 40 Iranian and foreign reporters after a cabinet meeting that Iran has repeatedly announced its opposition to the US attack on Iraq.
He said principally, Iran feels the danger of US unilateralism not for itself but for all humanity.
"We are not pleased with Iraqi regime as well; it (the Iraqi regime) has done injustice against our nation; but it is not the way to deal with the issue," added Khatami.
Criticizing the United States' approach to Iran over the past half a century, Khatami said changes in the US both in deeds and words are the requisites for resumption of ties between Tehran and Washington.
President Khatami said that unfortunately one cannot predict any situation (in ties between Iran and the United States), given that an "extremist" wing is in power in that country whose policies are dangerous to the whole world.
"The only way (for resumption of ties with the US) is that the one, who has committed injustice, changes its policies and behaviors," said the president.
"We do not say that we intend not to have any ties with anywhere for ever; we are pursuing policy of detente towards all countries," added the president.
He said that Iran has always been the loser in its ties with the US over the past half a century and it has been subjected to tyranny and accusations with its rights being trampled upon.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran would take any action it deems necessary to regain its rights but no decision has yet been taken to lodge a complaint with the International Court of Justice in the Hague," he said.
