Tehran, Nov 4, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi said here Monday that the Islamic Republic is not in a position to confirm foreign media reports that Osama bin Laden's son was in a group that is said to have entered Iran illegally from its eastern border.
Answering questions from reporters at his weekly press conference, Asefi said Iran's border security guards only check the legality of documents of foreign nationals trying to enter the country, stressing that it may be impossible to confirm the identities of these nationals.
Nonetheless, he said he would not discount the possibility that foreign nationals may have illegally crossed the country's eastern border into Iranian territory in recent months, stressing that Iranian border guards will refuse entry of any hostile persons or groups regardless of their nationality and who are known to be opposed to the Islamic Republic.
Asefi also stressed that confronting illegal traffic is the principal duty of Iranian border guards, and that over the past two months tens of people who were found to have illegally enetered the country have been expelled.
