Tehran, Aug 5, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said here on Monday that the Islamic Republic of Iran has no link with the Taliban and the al-Qaeda group.
Referring to claims made by the US special envoy on Afghanistan and President George W. Bush's special assistant for Near Eastern Affairs, Zalmay Khalilzad, concerning presence of some al-Qaeda members in Iran, he stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly announced its opposition to al-Qaeda during the past few years. Iran has been among a few countries to announced its opposition to Taliban by words and deeds, he added.
Khalilzad on Friday accused Iran of harboring members of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network after they fled the US bombing onslaught in Afghanistan.
"The accusation of presence of several al-Qaeda members in Iran is not at all in conformity with the past and present realities in the country and is not accepted by any impartial person," Asefi told a group of domestic journalists.
Washington has been turned into a bully in the world and is attempting to achieve its illegitimate objectives by violating international norms and regulations, he said.
On Bushehr nuclear power plant, he stressed that there have been peaceful objectives behind construction of the power plant.
The power plant has been inspected by members of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for several times, the Foreign Ministry spokesman further said.
European and western countries could complete the unfinished project of Bushehr nuclear power plant so that they could become familiar with the objectives behind construction of the plant, he said regretting that they not only did not carry out their commitments but also levelled baseless accusations against the Islamic Republic.
"The power plant has always followed peaceful objectives in the past and will do the same in the future," Asefi once again announced.
