Tehran, July 31, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said here on Wednesday that Iran and Yemen are for restoration of stability and security in the region.
Khatami told the visiting Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Baqr Abdullah al-Kurbi that both Tehran and San'a, which enjoy many historical and cultural commonalties and independent governments, are for progress and development.
He said that the two countries should promote mutual cooperation in bilateral, regional and international fields by relying on political understanding as well as economic and scientific exchanges.
He stressed removal of administrative obstacles and using present potentials for expansion of relations, hoping that mutual cooperation would further expand in light of the firm determination of senior Iranian and Yemeni officials to that end.
Touching on the sensitive condition of the region as well as the crises threatening the region, the president said that Muslim countries need to exert vigilance to ease grounds for crisis.
He said though intervention in Iraq might be made under the pretext of and with an intention of establishing security in the region, the action is itself a factor of insecurity.
The president added that the oppressed Iraqi nation are the first people who will pay the price of improper behaviors.
Khatami emphasized that Iraq should respect UN resolutions. The territorial integrity, national security and will of the Iraqi nation are also respected by Iran and all the regional states, he added.
He referred to the condition in occupied territories and the global condemnation of state terrorism of the Zionist regime, saying that permanent peace would not be achieved unless the rights of the oppressed Palestinian people are restored.
Al-Kurbi highlighted the similarity in the stances of Iran and Yemen, underlining expansion of two-way ties in all fields.
He hailed Iran's stances vis-a-vis Palestine and Iraq, saying Yemen is against any military attack on Iraq.
He stressed the need for more efforts by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to forge unity among Muslim states.
Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi was also present at the meeting.
